Shikadai Nara

Shikadai Nara (奈良シカダイ, Nara Shikadai) is a chūnin of Konohagakure, heir to the Nara clan, son of Shikamaru Nara and Temari Nara, nephew of Gaara and Kankuro Sand, and a member of the new “Team 10” under the orders of Moegi Kazamatsuri. Shikadai Nara is also part of the seventeenth generation of the Ino–Shika–Chō trio with his teammates Chōchō Akimichi and Inojin Yamanaka.

Personality

Shikadai is very similar to his father, Shikamaru, in many ways, possessing a laid back and unenthusiastic personality. He considers doing activities to be very tiring and is quick to shirk them as seen when he rejected an invitation from Inojin to train after school. Stemming from this carefree nature, he also does not properly respect hierarchy, greeting his uncle – the Kazekage – in a casual manner before greeting his other uncle Kankurō. He also seems to be outspoken and sincere like his mother, telling Boruto that playing a prank during the Kage Reunion was stupid. This carefree characteristic is still reflected in the catchphrase he inherited from his father, “what a drag” (mendokusē), which he uses to refer to something uninteresting.

In the novelization of Boruto: Naruto the Movie, he is referred to as a gamer and seems to have a strong moral code. For example, he was personally offended when Boruto revealed that he was cheating in the two-player video game with Inojin. He also relented against Boruto, who he did not know was cheating at the time, in their fight during the Chūnin Exams because he felt that as a gamer, one must understand when it is time to give up to fight another day when the odds are overwhelmingly against you. And because Boruto is his best friend, he is extremely upset when he discovers the cheating.

Appearance

Shikadai follows the usual Nara look, with his spiky, black hair tied up in a ponytail. His eyes, however, are similar in shape to his mother’s. His facial expressions also resemble his mother’s, and he is very tall for his age. During the Academy, Shikadai’s clothing consisted of a white blouse, a green shirt with yellow sleeves and collar, over it, blue pants and ordinary shinobi sandals. Currently, he wears a dark outfit, with a light cream colored jacket over it, which has printed the same emblem seen on the jacket his father used to wear in Part I. Also as usual for his clan, both his ears are pierced with gray earrings.

Shikamaru Hiden: The Cloud That Hovers in the Silence of Darkness

Shikadai makes an appearance at the end of this novel as a newborn baby being held by his mother, without having a name decided on yet. His father notes his crying as “lazy and feeling known for all the world,” and suggests that it will be better for him to explore the world with his friends.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations

After the class at the Academy is over, Shikadai warns Boruto not to continue his banter because of the meeting of the five Kage. Upon arriving home, he tells his mother to let Ino know that his stomach is hurting, simply so he doesn’t have to train. He casually greets his uncle Gaara, and is reprimanded by his mother, Temari, but shrugs his shoulders and asks his other uncle Kankurō instead of Gaara.

Sarada Uchiha arc

Upon hearing that he and the rest of his class will be participating in the graduation exams in a week, Shikadai takes little interest in the idea of becoming a shinobi. Later, he accompanies his father in preventing Boruto from interrupting the Seventh Hokage’s duties, and to his chagrin, his father asked him to let Naruto’s clone know where Boruto was.

Versus Momoshiki  Arc

After finishing his missions for the day, Shikadai goes out with Boruto and Inojin to play video games. When he discovers that Boruto is cheating at the game, he gets angry and tells Boruto that passing the level in the game on his own behind his mother’s back is much more fun.

He subsequently enters the Chūnin Exams with Inojin and Chōchō. He uses his shadow to hold Inojin and Chōchō against the sides of a pit to avoid falling and not be disqualified in the first round of the Chūnin Exams administered by Sai. In the second round, Ino-Shika-Chō uses his teamwork to easily capture a flag to advance. In the third round of individual fights, Shikadai is selected to face a kunoichi from Sunagakure Yodo, which he defeats and moves on.

In the final round of the exams, Shikadai faces Boruto. Shikadai is able to capture Boruto and his clones from the shadows, creating a huge shadow circle, capturing all at once. When he tells a trapped Boruto to give up, instead, Boruto creates several shadow clones to surround Shikadai with the help of his forearm device.

Shikadai admits defeat, similar to the way his father did against his mother when he was younger. However, Shikadai is declared the winner when it is discovered that Boruto was cheating. When Momoshiki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki begin their attack in the arena, Shikadai is protected by Rock Lee and saved by his uncle Gaara from the wreckage of the stadium, before being evacuated.

After the battle against the Ōtsutsuki and the Hokage’s sacrifice to protect the village, many people end up being injured and Shikadai looks at the numbers that exceeded the maximum number of vacancies in the Konoha Hospital, seeing Boruto running past and watching him for a while.

A little later, when Sasuke is taking Boruto to participate in the rescue of the Seventh Hokage, Shikadai bids the boy farewell and dismisses any attempt by him to explain himself about his cheating in the Chūnin Exams, stating that he would listen to him once he returned safely. With the problem with the Ōtsutsuki resolved, Shikadai finds Boruto and they both make their way to the top of a train, where Nara accepts his friend’s apology and apologizes for not having had time to listen to him earlier. As the conversation goes on, both friends are determined not to let themselves be overtaken by the other’s power in the future.

Konoha Shinden: Steam Ninja Scrolls

In the anime, while Shikadai was together with his father and Boruto to eat at Raio Burger, they met Mirai, who was preparing for a mission with the Sixth Hokage and Might Guy. Some time later, it was decided by his father and the Seventh Hokage to promote Shikadai to chūnin, based on both his leadership skills and genuine devotion to his allies.

Abilities

Shikadai is regarded as a prodigy among the Nara clan, having inherited his father’s intelligence and bearing the Kazekage Clan bloodline. During the Chnin Exams, he was seen as a particularly difficult opponent for Boruto, indicating that he is clearly superior to his last opponent, Yurui of Kumogakure. In the film adaptation of the novel, Shikadai easily defeated Yodo, who was seen as Sunagakure’s greatest hope for victory. Shikadai stated during his battle with Boruto that he planned at least 12 options in case Boruto used the Rasengan.

Nara clan techniques

Shikadai is a skilled user thanks to his clan’s ability to control his shadow, which, when linked to that of a target, forces him to imitate its actions. He can also utilize the method to restrict his opponent’s movements rather than forcing him to imitate his own. His ability to use the method still allows him to broaden his scope and grab many targets at once. This unnamed method allows him to totally hide his shadow across a vast area, allowing him to easily capture and take on several opponents before they can respond. Shikamaru gives Temari credit for allowing his clan’s abilities to progress thus far.

As a member of his generation of the Ino-Shika-Chō, he is learning the collaborative techniques to be performed between him, Inojin, and Chōchō.
