Orochimaru

Orochimaru (大蛇丸, Orochimaru) was a former member of Team Hiruzen and one of the three Konohagakure’s legendary Sannin, along his teammates Jiraiya and Tsunade. He was a member of the Root organization under Danzō Shimura’s leadership and later a defector from Konoha village after being discovered doing experiments on villagers. He after joined Akatsuki and became an official member of the organization under Pain’s command. He wore the “Void” ring (空, Kū) on his left pinky finger. During Part. 1, Orochimaru was the main antagonist of the manga until he was killed by Sasuke Uchiha. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, he was revived by his ward. He is the master of Kabuto Yakushi.

Appearance

Originally, when Orochimaru appeared, he appeared as a person with very pale skin, with black hair that reaches his waist. He possesses amber eyes with slits in his pupils and purple markings around his eyes, referring to his snake-like nature. Although he has acquired new bodies on several occasions, he has modified them to his original form, minus the height differences. In addition, he seems to be able to change his face with that of the bodies he has killed, as shown when he faced the Third Hokage and the battle at Tenchi Bridge.

He has been seen on several occasions with different outfits. He generally wears gray robes with black pants and a large thick purple belt tied in a knot on his back, he also wears blue tomoes in the form of earrings. He is seen wearing a black collar underneath it. As a small boy, he wore a long white tunic with a purple lining embroidered in the shape of black or yellow tomoes, tied with a purple ribbon forming a bow in the front, as well as white leggings and black open-toed shoes, and the upper part of the leotard with a purple lining underneath it.

In various flashbacks, he is also seen wearing the Otogakure ninja uniform and the Otogakure village band on his head, as well as the Konoha ninja uniform. During his stay in Konoha, his clothing usually consisted of a dark shirt inside a purple Kimono over a leggings shirt, bandages that serve as a girdle, dark pants, and a kind of armor around his hips. On his left hand he has a tattoo, which he uses to summon snakes.

On one occasion, when he proposed to Tsunade to heal his arms, he was seen wearing a long purple robe with a loose pink vest, as well as a gray kimono, with a polo neck in Zaku’s flashback. During his time in Akatsuki, he wore the standard black cape with red clouds. In his room, he is sometimes seen wearing an auburn shirt with a design of two white snakes on the back of the sleeves on both sides, as well as at the same time black pants.

After countless experiments on his own body, his true form is that of a Giant White Snake composed of a large number of small snakes of the same color, in this form he possesses long black spiky hair, a snake face with a large number of teeth and a large tongue, also some black markings on the eyes and a pointed chin.

In the epilogue, Orochimaru has a more youthful tone that years ago he did not have, possibly using another human body as a vessel; his hairstyle consists of 2 bangs pointing to both sides of the face, leaving a large gap in the forehead and a ponytail that reaches the middle of the back, also uses a circle-shaped earrings with two blades at the bottom, uses a white Kimono (lilac in the film) similar to that of his childhood and has a black belt (white in the film) and on it, a smaller purple belt under her kimono she has a blue zippered T-shirt that she keeps closed up to the neck and a pair of bell style pants of the same blue color as her T-shirt, she has the typical shinobi sandals.

Personality

Orochimaru’s various experiments on humans were conducted in order to serve two purposes: the most prominent of which was his desire to learn all the jutsu in the world. He was often seen as “twisted” by a lot of other people, including Tsunade. Jiraiya has speculated that this was due to the fact that his parents died when he was at a very young age, and when flashbacks are often shown during his battle with the Third Hokage, he spoke along these lines. Perhaps because he wanted to see his parents, or as a means of avenging their deaths. Another reason could be that he witnessed firsthand the death of Tsunade’s younger brother, Nawaki, and her boyfriend, Dan, and the pain such a tragedy caused him. He seemed saddened by the fragility of human life and how it affects those who are still alive, leading to his desire for immortality.

He experimented on others to see what kind of modifications the human body can withstand and otherwise harness the unique abilities of a subject for himself. Once accomplishing this goal, Orochimaru hoped to be worthy of the title of “ultimate”. Because a human’s life expectancy does not allow enough time to learn all the jutsus, Orochimaru also experimented on others in order to achieve immortality. By living through time, Orochimaru did not have to worry about death and therefore all the knowledge he gained would not be lost.

Above all, Orochimaru was concerned only with himself. He was bored when there was no conflict or violence in the world. Although there were a number of followers who would do anything for him, Orochimaru treats them as mere pawns. He does not hesitate to send them to their deaths for his own personal gain, and only finds remorse in their loss if they were unable to properly complete a task. To win over these followers, despite discarding them, Orochimaru approached them with a promise to make their dreams come true. He applied various Cursed Seals to many of his strongest subordinates in order to corrode their body and mind, making them more susceptible to his influence and control.

While he showed great interest in Sasuke Uchiha as a prodigy, Orochimaru had shown contempt towards Naruto Uzumaki, believing him to be a lost cause, without any talent in the ninjutsu arts. However, when Kabuto was injured with his Rasengan, Orochimaru thought that Naruto would become a threat in the future and tried to kill him. Afterwards, Orochimaru made it clear that he was now more interested in Naruto’s development, despite the failed assassination attempt against him.

He trained Sasuke so that he could become stronger to kill his older brother, Itachi. But, in reality, Orochimaru’s plan was to take possession of Sasuke’s body, and as a result, be able to control the Sharingan. Because of that, he was going to help Sasuke in any way necessary, with the knowledge that he had to become his new body. However, Orochimaru had not foreseen the foul play of Sasuke, who never intended to become Orochimaru’s new body, instead, he was always planning the creation of his own platoon. Orochimaru was not completely blind to all this, however, showing only a little surprise when Sasuke moved to betray him, merely saying “it’s like this, it all came down to this after all.”

Orochimaru has a hatred for his previous affiliation, Akatsuki. Throughout Part II, if Orochimaru wasn’t busy with Sasuke’s development, he would try to cripple Akatsuki’s operation, seen in “In Part II”. He is shown to be happy when he found out that his former partner in the organization, Sasori, had died, and the only reason he prevented from killing Sasuke to Team Kakashi is because he expected them to go kill another member of the Akatsuki, just like they did with Sasori. Orochimaru also hated his hometown, first, Konoha, and has tried several times to destroy the village.

After being revived by Sasuke, Orochimaru’s personality seems to have changed. Although he still wished to take over Sasuke’s body, he said that he could not obtain it because he was currently weak. He took an interest in Sasuke’s changed to the point of helping him make a decision, reviving the former Hokage to tell him the history of the village and the Uchiha, as well as later using them to contribute to the war to defeat the Ten-Tails and Madara Uchiha. Orochimaru also took it upon himself to go find and heal Tsunade and the other Kages who were also injured from their recent battle, accompanied by Karin and Suigetsu. When these two began to argue, Orochimaru mocked them, calling them weird while he stretched his neck and stuck out his tongue, to which they both think that the weirdest one was him and that it was not only his soul, but also his body.

He is currently willing to help Konoha in investigating urgent matters and also feels responsible enough to make amends for past mistakes. He continues with his investigations but these have been moderated to a great extent,in fact he has stopped using sacrifices for it. He is apparently on friendly terms with Konohagakure by sending his son, Mitsuki, to the academy.

History

Past

After his early graduation from the Academy, Orochimaru, being a Genin, was assigned as Jiraiya and Tsunade’s teammate, in charge of Hiruzen Sarutobi’s tutelage. His parents died when he was very young, while the Third Hokage quickly recognized Orochimaru’s natural talent, often telling Jiraiya that he should be more like him. Despite this gift, the Third Hokage was aware of an evil within him, but chose to pretend not to notice it because he hoped that it might one day subside or be eliminated. As the years passed, he formed a great friendship with Jiraiya, though not without rivalry.

During the Second Shinobi World War, he and his companions participated in leading the Konoha Forces, making an amazing difference and even survived a fight against the invincible Amegakure Leader, Salamander Hanzo, who dubbed them as the legendary Sannin (伝説の三忍, Densetsu no Sannin) for surviving a fight against him. Finished the fight, the now Sannin, encounter the Rain Orphans, who, according to Orochimaru, had to be killed, but, eventually, Jiraiya took care of them. In the anime, it is not known when exactly it was. The Sannin traveled to Kumogakure, where he causes the breaking of the Fukai seal and the release of the Eight-Tails with his Unsealing of the Five Elements. During the commotion caused by Gyūki, after Motoi’s Father was killed and A cut off one of the horns of the Tailed Beast, the Sannin extracted samples of the horns in order to reproduce them in his laboratory and left the place.

In the past, Orochimaru encountered Kabuto Yakushi among a group of orphans who were helping Nono in healing Konoha Ninjas. The Sannin asked Kabuto, who had shown remarkable skills with Medical Ninjutsu, if he wanted to become a ninja. After he refused, Orochimaru lamented that this was a waste of talent. At some point, the Sannin became Anko Mitarashi’s teacher and, in addition, worked as a Root member for Danzo (probably, as a personal bodyguard). One day, he accompanied Danzo to the orphanage to talk to Nonō; he and another shinobi simultaneously threatened to rob the orphanage and kidnap the orphans. Five years after Kabuto became a spy and went on a mission to Iwagakure, Orochimaru appeared to the young man once again and, from then on, the latter would be his right-hand man.

According to Tsunade, Orochimaru was always twisted, even as a child. His sadistic attitude was probably due to the death of his parents, which led him to study Kinjutsu and eventually become obsessed with learning all the ninjutsu. Jiraiya had a theory that his fellow Sannin went down this path in an attempt to forget his painful memories. Sarutobi, in particular, had high hopes for him, even to the day of his death he loved his student.

His teacher hoped that one day he would be his successor. And indeed, among Orochimaru’s ambitions, one of them included becoming the Fourth Hokage. However, his eyes were set on goals totally unrelated to the ideals traditionally associated with the title, embraced unconditionally by his master. Hiruzen knew that “the true strength of a ninja will manifest itself when it comes to protecting something important,” and the role of the Hokage is to love and protect the townspeople as if they were family. For the Sannin, however, Hokage was nothing more than a potential conquest on the way to what he was really interested in: power. This mindset influenced the image of him, the people around him, as a young Ibiki, who saw him as “something inhuman in human form.”

Hiruzen had hoped that his pupil would see the error of the path taken, but, as time passed, it became clear that Orochimaru was a lost cause. When Hiruzen finally retired years later, he opted for a student of Jiraiya, Minato Namikaze, rather than the Sannin as his successor, thus making Minato the Fourth Hokage. Realizing that he had nothing to gain from his stay in Konoha, Orochimaru began to be less discreet with his actions-

Over the years, the Sannin began to kidnap his fellow Konoha members, and used them as guinea pigs. He experimented on them to develop techniques that would grant him immortality, as his dream was to learn every technique in the world (a task that would take far more than a human lifetime). In one experiment, he tested on his own students the capabilities of the Cursed Seal of Heaven, most notably Anko Mitarashi, who was the sole survivor of his tests with the powerful seal.

In another experiment, he injected the genes of the First Hokage into sixty newborn babies in the hope that they would master the Mokuton technique, and the ability to control the Biju. Orochimaru believed that all of the test babies had died, but in reality, one of them, Yamato, survived, and retained the abilities that the Sannin had desired, albeit in a rather limited and weak form compared to the original user of the element. It is also known that Orochimaru injected cells from the First Hokage and a large number of Sharingan into an arm that would later be used by Danzo.

When eventually the many disappearances were finally attributed to the Sannin, Hiruzen knew it was his duty to kill him. However, at the final moment, Hiruzen was unable to kill his prized pupil for whom he had, despite everything, much love.

After leaving Konoha, Orochimaru joined Akatsuki to gain more power, his partner being Sasori. After the Uchiha Clan Massacre, Itachi joined the organization and, at that time, the Sannin tried to take control of Itachi Uchiha’s body to get his Sharingan. Due to his abilities, Itachi was able to foresee Orochimaru’s intentions, and cut off the hand in which he wore his Akatsuki ring after reversing the technique. Unable to take Itachi’s body, the Sannin left the organization and took his ring with him.

Because of Orochimaru’s defection, Sasori ended up developing a grudge against him, and sent the brainwashed Kabuto Yakushi to spy on him. however, the Sannin overrode the brainwashing and Kabuto instead became the Sannin’s loyal right-hand man without raising suspicion in Akatsuki. Eventually, he founded his own village, Otogakure, to conduct various experiments on his prisoners. Orochimaru had been obsessed with the idea of possessing the Totsuka Sword, an ethereal sword, for quite some time, unaware that this sword was in the possession of Itachi’s Susanoo.

In the anime, it was shown that, at a certain point, the Sannin told Kabuto Yakushi about the Edo Tensei, telling the latter that in order to get the jutsu completed, genetic samples of famous ninjas are needed. The Sannin then revived Yota with the intention of testing Edo Tensei, so he sent Yota to Konoha.

At some point, when the Kaguya Clan tried to destroy Kirigakure and they themselves were destroyed by the opposite, Orochimaru was on the outskirts of the village, watching and commenting on their madness. It is there where he met Kimimaro Kaguya, the only survivor of the clan, who was taken in by the Sannin, hoping to become his new body due to his particular Kekkei Genkai.

When Orochimaru began researching the source of Jugo’s powers and discovered the Ryūchi Cave, he attempted to obtain the Senjutsu, but failed due to his current body not being able to absorb the natural energy.

Part I

Chūnin Exams

Before the start of the Chunin exams, the Sannin allies with Sunagakure, intending to invade Konoha together. After killing the Fourth Kazekage, the Sannin disguises himself as him to give the illusion of the village leader’s approval, and the village agrees to take part in the invasion of Konoha. Before the invasion begins, Orochimaru kills and impersonates a Kusagakure Genin and infiltrates the examinations in hopes of obtaining and observing Itachi Uchiha’s brother: Sasuke Uchiha. During the second phase of the exams, the Sannin attacks Sasuke to test his abilities.

During the battle, however, Orochimaru did not imagine having to be forced to deal with Naruto Uzumaki. Recognizing Naruto as a potential threat in the future, the Sannin seals the fox’s chakra with a 5 Element Seal, preventing Naruto from accessing it and using that power, attacking him. After the Sannin’s attention returns to Sasuke, Sasuke decides to hold a fight against him, due to Naruto’s example of bravery. As a reward to Sasuke for carrying out that battle against him, Orochimaru bites his neck, thus placing the cursed seal of heaven on him, and disappears into the surrounding forest. At this, Anko finds him and holds a short battle against him until he shows according to his true form and leaves her paralyzed by his cursed seal.

As the Sannin continues to monitor Sasuke’s progress through the exams, he has a non-violent encounter with Kakashi and begins to worry about Naruto Uzumaki’s influence over Sasuke. Because of this, the Sannin decides that he must separate Sasuke from Naruto as soon as he can.

During the Chunin examination preliminaries, Orochimaru disguises himself as a sound sensei, sending his disciples Dosu, Zaku and Kin to fight. Zaku is defeated by Shino; Kin is defeated by Shikamaru, and Dosu defeats Chōji, but much later in the story, Dosu is killed by Gaara. Likewise, he secretly led Yoroi, who was defeated by Sasuke and Misumi, who was defeated by Kankuro. Innocently, Kankuro, Temari, Gaara and his Sensei, Baki, served the Sannin, believing that the Kazekage (supplanted by Orochimaru) was running the operation.

Konoha Crush

Disguised as the fourth Kazekage, Orochimaru watches the final bouts of the Chunin examination with the Third Hokage. When the invasion of Konoha begins, the Sannin removes his disguise, revealing that he planned the invasion for the sole purpose of getting the Sandaime killed, as well as kidnapping Sasuke. As the two begin the battle, Orochimaru uses the forbidden technique of Impure Resuscitation Jutsu to resurrect the first two and the fourth Hokage to defeat the Third. However, the fourth’s soul was sealed, so he could not be resurrected.

The Sannin forces the Third’s predecessors to fight against the Third, so eventually the Third summons Enma to confront them. However, the souls of his masters were bound to the world, so he could not defeat them conventionally; thus, he is forced to use Minato’s Sealing Jutsu to seal their souls, and thus Orochimaru as well. Given his advanced age, he cannot seal the soul of his disciple, so, consequently, he decides a greater punishment than killing him: to leave him alive, but without his arms, leaving him without the possibility of using hand seals in his life, and thus destroying his dream of learning all the existing jutsu. Once he succeeds, he dies and the Sannin escapes with the help of his henchmen.

Search for Tsunade

Once he had his arms sealed, Orochimaru complains of great pain, and seeks out his former teammate, Tsunade, in the hope that she can restore his arms. Upon finding her, the Sannin’s offer as payment is to resurrect his former love, Dan, and his younger brother Nawaki. Although she considers the offer, after meeting with Naruto Uzumaki, she declines the offer, knowing that eventually Orochimaru would destroy Konoha if he heals her arms. She seeks to kill the Sannin, and pretends that she is going to heal his arms, but, in truth, she sought to damage them, although Kabuto Yakushi prevents it. However, Kabuto falls defeated and he is forced to face not only Tsunade, but Jiraiya as well. In his weakened state, Orochimaru cannot present much opposition in the fight against his former fellow Sannin and falls defeated. He flees the battle, threatening to return to destroy Konoha and to take a new host for his soul. Shortly after this, Tsunade argues with her fellow Sannin and his apprentice (Naruto Uzumaki) for the position of Hokage, as they both are proposed to, but Jiraiya does not accept.

Sasuke Recovery Mission

In a last plan to heal his arms and recover his jutsus, and in the process get the Sharingan, the Sannin sends the Four Of Sound to bring Sasuke Uchiha. He waits impatiently for Sasuke’s arrival, as he felt unbearable pain, even for himself because of the necrosis in his arms. Although he tries to resist hoping that Sasuke will arrive on time, Kabuto suggests him not to wait any longer, as his health condition was worsening. This, coupled with other factors, forces Orochimaru to switch to Gen’yūmaru’s body, even though Kabuto was willing to give his own body to his master. Sasuke arrives late after the violent fight against Naruto. However, because the Sannin can only use this body-switching Jutsu every three years, he must wait to obtain Sasuke’s body and consequently begins to train the young Uchiha to fulfill his promise to give Sasuke the power he longed for.

Part II

Sasuke and Sai

Three years later, Sakura, Naruto, Sai and Yamato go in search of Sasori’s spy, who turns out to be Kabuto, at the bridge of heaven and earth. Yamato, disguised as Sasori, goes with the supposed spy that the puppeteer had sent. Yamato asks Kabuto questions, Orochimaru reappears, Kabuto attacks Yamato in disguise and it is revealed that the Sannin used him as an experiment with the First Hokage’s DNA. Right there the battle begins. Yamato calls the rest of his team to help him. Orochimaru confronts Naruto Uzumaki, who is among them, and provokes him, saying that Sasuke has gained more power than him and that he should test his strength by confronting them. Enraged by the Sannin’s words, Naruto ends up using Kurama’s four-tailed form and Kurama attacks the Sannin. Although Orochimaru seems to enjoy the battle, Naruto’s attacks are extremely powerful and put him in near-death situations. After blocking Naruto’s most powerful attack, the Sannin tries to repel him with his Kusanagi, which can barely stop the powerful jinchuriki.

Because he exerts too much effort in combat, Orochimaru’s host body begins to reject him and he must flee. Meanwhile, Sai approaches the Sannin and proposes an alliance on behalf of his organization to destroy Konoha. The latter accepts, and brings Sai with him to his hideout, where, upon arrival, he declines his body. As he refuses, Sai leaves Orochimaru and allies with Team 7. The Sannin confronts him in an effort to determine where the young ninja’s loyalties really lie. Being outnumbered, and still weary from his fight against Naruto Uzumaki, Orochimaru is forced to let Sai go. The Sannin later reappears to pull Sasuke away from Team 7. Sasuke, wanting to do whatever it takes to make Itachi Uchiha’s death easier, agrees, and disappears with his master.

Three-Tails’ Appearance

In the anime, sensing that the time was approaching to change bodies, the Sannin sent Kabuto to find Guren, so that she could help with preparations for the process.

During this time, the Sannin was also experimenting on a boy named Yūkimaru, with unusual powers. Orochimaru eventually decided it was time to test Sasuke’s abilities and watched in amazement as he defeated an army of ninja without receiving a scratch.

As Sasuke walked away, the Sannin admitted that while he used the power to be a genius, Sasuke’s powers had far surpassed his own power when he was Sasuke’s age. Realizing that Guren was watching, he offered her another chance to prove herself worthy as Orochimaru’s next body, to which she was delighted.

The Sannin paired her with Yūkimaru, noting that their skills should work well together. Later, it was revealed that the Sannin also opted for Guren because he knew that she would eventually bond with Yūkimaru. He ordered Kabuto to be ready to eliminate her, if she betrayed him. Later, after receiving word that the Konoha shinobi were complicating things, Orochimaru decided that he might have to personally intervene. In the end, he didn’t.

Later, after Yūkimaru lost his abilities and Guren presumably died, Kabuto informed his master about the failed operation. The Sannin dismissed it as nothing more than a minor setback, saying that once he had Sasuke’s body, there would be no interference.

Itachi Pursuit Mission

On the verge of being rejected by his current body, the Sannin contemplates the best way to carry Sasuke’s body. Also, in the anime, he and Kabuto recap all the events that led to Sasuke’s defection and how much he had improved since then. Before he could formulate his plan, Sasuke attacked him, trying to kill him with the Chidori Eisō, but only manages to pierce his arms, and having decided that Orochimaru was not worthy of having an Uchiha body. The Sannin proceeded to reveal his true body, a large white snake made of a multitude of small snakes, in order to initiate the process of the Living Corpse Reincarnation, and thus take his body.

In a short battle, Sasuke cuts Orochimaru’s large snake body into various parts, only to realize that the vaporizing blood is turning into a paralyzing poison. The Sannin, faced with this, begins the process to successfully take his body. Unfortunately for the Sannin, Sasuke stops the process, as his brother had done years before, but this one went a step further, absorbing the Sannin and part of his powers. Sasuke had access to some of Orochimaru’s abilities and, at the same time, had to dedicate part of his chakra for chakra suppression.

During the battle against his brother, Itachi, Sasuke runs out of chakra, and the Sannin seizes the opportunity and emerges. He marveled at the fact that he would finally have the chance to possess Itachi’s body, but immediately Itachi’s Susanoo sword pierces him. At first, the Sannin boasted that it would take more than just a scratch to kill him. However, he soon realized that something was wrong, as he had been pierced by the Totsuka sword he himself had been searching for for several years. Finally, the Sannin was permanently sealed by Itachi’s Susanoo, as well as Sasuke’s Cursed Seal. Interestingly, three white snakes escaped the seal, but were then charred by the flames of Itachi’s Amaterasu.

In a separate meeting, Kabuto met with Naruto, and revealed that he had integrated some of Orochimaru’s remains into his body, hoping to overcome his former master, but also gradually being overrun by Sannin cells. The Orochimaru cells began to fight to possess Kabuto, causing him to become more and more like the Sannin.

Birth of the Ten-Tails’ Jinchūriki

At the climax of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Sasuke stated that he must meet Orochimaru. Suigetsu, surprised, asks him whether or not he was dead because he thought he was. At this, Sasuke says that he needs something from him and in order to get it, he is willing to see him again. He also says that he has to meet with the person who knows everything.

Afterwards, Jugo removes a portion of Kabuto’s body and places it on top of Anko’s Cursed Seal, and Sasuke uses the Evil Release Method technique to free Orochimaru. Then, the Sannin, once released, explains that he knows all about this war, as he had been observing everything inside Anko’s body and admits that he has no interest in this war, that he just wants Sasuke’s body, but does not yet have the power needed to obtain it. He then asks Sasuke why he wants to meet with him, to which Sasuke replies that he wants to find his own answer. Orochimaru thinks that Itachi has manipulated Sasuke, but it’s not like when he or Tobi manipulated him. He then absorbs his chakra that was inside Kabuto and tells Sasuke that the way he is going is not bad, and tells Sasuke to follow him, because he is going to help him, starting a journey to Konoha.

Once there, Orochimaru and the others feel Naruto’s chakra in his battle against the Ten-Tails. After this, the Sannin, along with Sasuke, Jūgo and Suigetsu, arrive at their destination in an unknown place in Konoha, which was the Uzumaki Clan’s Temple of Masks. After taking a mask from the place, they headed to the Nakano Shrine, e where Orochimaru uses a method to free the souls trapped in the stomach of the Demon of Death, thus managing to recover his arms, and being able to revive the first four Hokage. The Sannin sacrifices himself in order to extract the souls, but before his body gives way, it is introduced into one of the Zetsu that were inside Sasuke, thus obtaining a new vessel, and cheating death once again.

Orochimaru replies to Minato that he managed to eliminate the seal thanks to the fact that he began to study the ruins and documents of the Uzumaki Clan, since that technique originated from that clan. The Sannin is the one who tells Hashirama that his granddaughter, Tsunade, is the fifth and current Hokage, besides telling Tobirama that his Edo Tensei technique was not so difficult after all, besides that it should never have been created because it has caused many problems to the shinobi world. He also reveals to the Kages that his plan is not to attack the Leaf, but to create an occasion to talk to them, besides telling Tobirama that he knows that he created the Uchiha Military Police to displace the Uchihas to the outskirts of the city and because he knew that the people don’t have much sympathy for those who control crime, being a tactic to keep them away from power. Orochimaru continues to listen to the conversation until the moment comes when he has to intervene, as Tobirama raises his chakra in such a way that the walls of the shrine begin to crack. A few moments later, when Hashirama thinks of the best way to respond to Sasuke, Hiruzen asks him why they don’t have much time and he replies that there is currently a war in which Madara Uchiha has been resurrected and plans to wipe out all the shinobi in the world. Upon hearing, the Hokages are surprised and Tobirama proves it to be true by detecting their chakra from a distance.

Hiruzen demands to the Sannin that, due to the situation, they go to the battlefield; however, the Sannin responds by saying that he is on Sasuke’s side and wants them to answer his questions, otherwise he might change his mind and could force them to destroy the village right then and there. Tobirama says that he is the developer of the Jutsu that brought them back and therefore won’t let them tamper with it, but Orochimaru keeps him under control, preventing him from leaving. Tobirama is surprised that he has used bodies with his brother’s cells to revive them, as this facilitates the Jutsu’s restraining ability. Later, when Hashirama finishes resolving Sasuke’s doubts, the Sannin asks him if he will continue with his plan to destroy Konoha or will he side with the alliance. Sasuke answers that he will defend the village and his brother’s ideals. Orochimaru decides to support him and follow in his footsteps, in addition to participating in the Fourth Shinobi World War with Sasuke, to which Hiruzen is surprised and asks him why he is now on Konoha’s side, if he tried to destroy it in the past. The Sannin replies that his path is to follow Sasuke’s decisions. After this, Orochimaru, along with the others, depart for the great Fourth Ninja War.

The Sannin arrives, along with Karin and Suigetsu, to where Tsunade is, commenting that she was not in good shape. Orochimaru moves closer to Tsunade, telling her that she seems to have overdone it a bit. Then, Katsuyu prepares

Madara’s Resurrection

After Obito’s defeat, the Shinobi Alliance is attacked by the Whirling Zetsu, who created a wooden statue and attacked using his arms. The Sannin, along with Suigetsu, Jūgo and Karin, were in hiding watching the battle. Suigetsu tells him that now is the time to go into battle, but the latter tells him not yet, so he stares at the Zetsu. Seconds later, when Karin realizes that something is wrong with Sasuke, the Sannin declares that they must hurry.

After that, Orochimaru, along with his former subordinates, start fighting Tobi. When Karin starts destroying the wooden statue with the diamond chains, the Sannin is pleased and says that that is the same power that Kushina Uzumaki had and that she is finally out. Later, after being attacked by Suigetsu and being held in the air by Jugo, Orochimaru stretches his neck and bites the Tobi, paralyzing him with a Cursed Seal to then go to where Sasuke was.

On the way, the Sannin was happy, something that would not last long when he heard from Karin that someone was next to Sasuke. The Sannin asks her if she knew that Chakra; he has a bad feeling. Hearing this, Orochimaru says that they have to be quick, as they don’t know what an unknown person will do to Sasuke, wondering in his mind if he’s going to stop there. Until they reach the area, Taka realizes that the “stranger” was none other than Kabuto. After Sasuke recovered, the Sannin is seen with him for Tobirama to take him to where Naruto and Madara were.

Kaguya Ōtsutsuki Strikes

Subsequently, when Madara managed to project the Infinite Tsukuyomi on the Moon, the Sannin, along with his former subordinates were trapped in it, and were taken and bound to the Tree God. Some time later, the Infinite Tsukuyomi is dispelled by Naruto and Sasuke, leaving Orochimaru and everyone else free. He would then leave the battlefield.

Blank Period

After the conclusion of the war, the Sannin would return to his experiments on genetics. Passively, though, Konoha did not entirely trust the Sannin, sending Yamato to constantly watch him outside his hideout.

Abilities

Being one of the Sannin, as well as a former member of the S-ranked criminal organization, Akatsuki, Orochimaru is an extremely powerful ninja. His powers, which can easily be considered Kage level, were so great, that at the time of the invasion of Konoha, the Third Hokage feared that no one in the village would be able to defeat him or fight on equal footing with him. Even Kakashi, one of the best ninja in Konoha, was in fear and dread when he came face to face with him during the course of the Chūnin Exams, and he himself admitted that he would not even stand a chance against his power, claiming that he had gone mad trying to face him. As one of the Sannin, Orochimaru made a name for himself and used to be the pride of all of Konoha.[1] His teacher, Hiruzen Sarutobi, who was considered Shinobi God (忍の神, Shinobi no Kami) once said of him, “Even with my intelligence, I cannot compete with such talent. “[1] This being just one of the reasons why he used to be called a genius since his childhood.[2] Orochimaru was considered by his master as someone extremely dangerous, being possessed of overwhelming power. For in Hiruzen’s considerations before he left Konoha, Orochimaru already had the power to defeat a small country by himself.[3] Orochimaru was able to hold a fight with his master.

He was able to hold a fight with Naruto Uzumaki with Four Tails in the second part while his body was in a weakened state, and despite the danger imposed, he found the battle very entertaining. Even then, his body gave out and he regretted that he could not complete the battle. Among the Sannin, he was the one who originally stood out for his individual ability. Because he is rarely shown in battle, he displayed a limited amount of techniques, although it stands to reason that in his efforts to learn all the existing jutsu, his arsenal of skills probably made him one of the greatest ninja. He was even able to assassinate Gaara’s father, the Fourth Kazekage. He has a vast knowledge in all forms of Jutsu. His fighting style is very fluid and he is almost invulnerable to most conventional techniques, even if he is pierced, maimed or cut in half. He even survived a direct hit from Tsunade’s monstrous super-strength and all it did was damage the skin that formed his mask. He has shown that even though he was paralyzed with Technique: Reaper’s Mortal Seal, he could still use ninjutsu without using Hand Seals. Orochimaru was a very sought after character, many high level shinobi were looking for him to assassinate him and the mere fact of having killed him, made Sasuke someone of much prestige, as not just any shinobi would have been able to accomplish that feat, even Kisame, one of the most powerful Akatsuki, said that it was something impressive and that Itachi should be proud of his little brother. [4] But later, Sasuke admitted that he was only able to accomplish it because Orochimaru was weak. 5] He was also praised by Hashirama Senju, telling Hiruzen that he had trained a very skilled shinobi.

Ninjutsu

Orochimaru, in his desire to learn all the jutsus in the world and be the greatest ninja, gained a great knowledge about various techniques, ranging from simple offensive techniques, which nevertheless become deadly when performed by him, to the highest ranking, or more complicated techniques. As for defensive techniques, Orochimaru uses both Summon: Rashōmon and Summon: Triple Rashōmon, in which he summons a varying number of large demonic gates that are capable of withstanding even the most intense forms of damage. If necessary, he can also place the Seal of the Five Elements on an opponent, sealing their access to chakra and thus rendering them useless in battle.

Orochimaru is one of three people able to perform the Summoning: Reincarnation of the Impure World, which allowed him to reincarnate the dead. The technique was developed, by the Second Hokage but left incomplete and Orochimaru took it upon himself to complete the technique. To perform the jutsu, Orochimaru must sacrifice a living human being, so that the soul of the deceased can be linked to the living world. The body is then sacrificed, surrounded by dirt and dust that is compacted into the form of the original body, of that soul he summoned. Although reincarnation can retain their original memories and personalities, which leaves them outside of Orochimaru’s control. However, he can suppress free will with his own special seal, to force them to do his bidding. The bodies of the resurrected are also capable of regenerating any wounds, that is, they can only be defeated by a seal, preventing their mobility or extracting their souls. After Orochimaru takes over a body of one of the White Zetsu, he acquires Hashirama’s cells, which gives him greater control over the technique.

Orochimaru was also skilled in Transformation Jutsu, as he proved by being able to watch Sasuke’s battle with Yoroi Akado during the Chūnin exams without any suspicion. He was also able to impersonate the Fourth Kazekage for weeks, fooling all of Suna, even his elite shinobi and those closest to the Kazekage did not suspect he was dead.

Nature Transformation

Being a high-level shinobi, Orochimaru mastered all the basic chakra natures: Fire, Wind, Lightning, Earth and Water, in addition to Yin and Yang; a feat that very few shinobi have been able to achieve on their own. He was seen using the Earth Element: Shadow Clone, which creates a clay copy of himself capable of attacking on his behalf. He can also use the Wind Element: Great Rupture, through which he can level a wide area with a powerful gust of wind. After taking over the body of a White Zetsu, Orochimaru gained access to the Kekkei Genkai Wood Element, which is produced by simultaneously using water and earth.

Immortality Techniques

In his quest to gain immortality, Orochimaru has made a series of modifications to his body, causing his natural form to take on the appearance of a giant white snake composed of many smaller snakes of the same color. This form has the advantage that it allows him to stretch any part of his body to great lengths, regenerate any wounds inflicted upon him and use the snakes for his attacks and if Orochimaru is cut into pieces, the body simply reforms, making him very difficult to kill. In addition, the blood released from killing the snakes is poisonous, evaporating into the air and causing paralysis to anyone who has breathed it.

The main use of the Living Corpse Reincarnation is to transfer his soul to another body and extend his life indefinitely. To use this jutsu, Orochimaru leaves his former body, revealing his true form. Once he has done this, he swallows the new body and transports it to a dimension within himself in which he absorbs it, allowing him to take over his body, Orochimaru can only use this jutsu once every three years, as this is the time when his body begins to reject him and forces him to find a new host. Although he could leave his body behind, the souls of those whose bodies he has taken over always remain within Orochimaru’s subconscious. After taking over another body, Orochimaru modifies it to suit his use of snakes in order to increase his survival abilities, such as stretching and bending his body, reconnecting his body after being cut and shedding his skin to heal injuries. Therefore, even if Orochimaru cannot transfer bodies, he can easily heal and dodge attacks, making him virtually immortal. Orochimaru also alters the face of his host body to resemble his original form.

His ultimate method for immortality would be his own Cursed Seals. Because each Cursed Seal is mixed with Orochimaru’s chakra, which is part of his consciousness, it inhabits the seal, allowing Orochimaru to retain some consciousness even if his original body is destroyed or he himself is sealed. By doing this, Orochimaru can interact with his host and share his senses. By combining a piece of his DNA with a person who has one of his cursed seals and using the Evil Release Method, Orochimaru can be fully resurrected any number of times, as long as there are enough seals and pieces of his DNA.

Snake Techniques

Orochimaru’s trait and trademark is his affinity for snakes which, in addition to affecting his appearance and the composition of his true form, and granting him the ability to extend his limbs to abnormal extremes and assume snake-like features during battle, led him to learn a number of snake-related techniques, including learning the Sage Mode. His snake-related techniques have been referred to as White Snake Power. One of these is the ability to summon giant snakes to fight alongside him in battle, made possible by the summoning contract tattooed on his arm. His signature was to summon Manda, a colossal serpent that was described as the largest in the world, with the ability to fight in the face of enormous creatures. With Hidden Shadow Snake Hands, Orochimaru could summon snakes in an instant from his sleeves and mouth to attack opponents, resulting in a large number of venomous bites. A stronger variation of this technique was the Hidden Hands of Many Shadow Snakes, in which the summoned snakes grow noticeably in number and size. He took the use of his snakes to such an extent that he developed a possession jutsu with which he can control different people thanks to the white snakes he introduces into their bodies.

Another use of snakes came in the form of his weapon, the Kusanagi Sword, the Kusanagi of Japanese legend. The sword is held inside a snake’s mouth, inside its own throat. He was able to extend it as far as possible to attack enemies far away, control it from a distance and, if the sword moved away, it could return to him in the form of a snake. Although he was able to wield the sword normally with great skill, it was not uncommon for him to use it without taking it out of his mouth. He was also able to have numerous Kusanagi Swords, like blades sprouting from the mouths of the snakes he called out.

His main technique is the Eight-Headed Snake technique, which allows him to transform into a huge eight-headed white snake larger than the enormous Manda, another reference to Japanese myth.

Summoning

Orochimaru has a special affinity with snakes, and he can instantly call upon Manda, the largest and most powerful of them all, for help by utilizing a special arm tattoo. He can strike with snakes that erupt from his lips or sleeves; the snakes may also grow sharp teeth inside their own jaws for a deadlier impact. In order to increase his speed and mobility in combat, he may even transform his lower body into a snake’s tail. The Eight Branches Technique, which Orochimaru uses to become an eight-headed, eight-tailed enormous serpent bigger than Manda, is his most powerful snake-related move.

Kenjutsu

Orochimaru can summon a snake from his mouth, which pulls out a sword called Kusanagi. This sword has several special features, such as the ability to damage the diamond, as well as levitate and elongate for hundreds of meters, being able to attack from very long distances. Orochimaru has a great mastery of the sword, allowing him to attack his opponents without taking it out of his mouth and being able to control it even if he does not have it in his hands, being able to pierce his opponents without them noticing.

He can also combine his skill with the sword along with the ability to extend his neck, allowing him to attack his opponents without having to move his body and at a good speed.

Senjutsu

In conducting research on the Jūgo Clan, Orochimaru finally tracked down the source of his power: the Ryūchi Cave. It was here that he was supposedly trained by the White Snake Sage in Senjutsu and attempted to learn how to use Sage Mode. However, he was unable to use this power to its full potential due to the fragility of his host’s organs, making him an unfeasible choice for battle. Likewise, he has enough knowledge to undo the Sage Mode transformation in other people and absorb the Senjutsu chakra within them, as seen with Kabuto.

To compensate for this flaw, Orochimaru developed other novel uses for his Senjutsu chakra: the Cursed Seals. By combining this chakra with the enzyme produced by Jugo, he was able to create these unique seals, which triggered a change almost identical to that of the Sage Transformation, but with various advantages and disadvantages. The Senjutsu chakra locked within these seals is naturally very potent, being that Kabuto was surprised by a portion of Orochimaru’s chakra he absorbed from Anko’s Seal, even after having assimilated the collective DNA of Team Taka, the Five of Sound and Orochimaru himself to himself. These seals also carried the added benefit of acting as anchors to Orochimaru’s consciousness, allowing him to observe events through any mark with the seal and even revive it any number of times under the right circumstances

Intelligence

From his childhood days, Orochimaru was identified as a ninja genius and a once-in-a-generation prodigy. His associations with powerful ninja and groups, such as mentoring by the Third Hokage and his performances in both Root and the Akatsuki organization and later his solo exploits in acquiring knowledge, allowed him to develop and have access to vast amounts of information.

Orochimaru is a master planner and manipulator. For years, he evaded capture by both Konoha and Akatsuki by creating a network of fully supplied hideouts throughout several countries. He was also able to manipulate the entire village of Sunagakure in the invasion of Konoha, posing as the Fourth Kazekage, unnoticed by anyone, after killing the real one weeks before the invasion. He was able to manipulate people to the point of turning several of his pawns into willing guinea pigs for his experiments, using a combination of manipulation, penetration into the victim’s past and the promise of power to gain their loyalty. The greatest examples of this are Kabuto and Kimimaro, who idolized the Sannin and showed absolute loyalty and great respect for him. He even developed a fail-safe plan, in case he was ever killed, by sealing his conscience in the cursed seals.
