HOW MANY SEASONS OF NARUTO
The anime Naruto is definitely one of the most famous Japanese animation series that has ever existed with around 220 episodes today since its beginning in 2002. Created by his Mangaka Masashi Kishimoto in 1999, the manga was first published on March 3, 2000, and has never stopped growing since this date.
However, the manga and anime have been divided in several seasons to separate the different Naruto Arcs and it’s completely normal that fans regularly wonder how the different Naruto seasons of the anime are divided and, obviously, how many seasons of Naruto are there ?
The anime Naruto is divided into 5 seasons and 220 episodes which aired in Japan from October 3, 2002, to May 10, 2006. The Naruto Shippuden anime is divided 21 seasons and 500 episodes. In total, the whole Naruto series has 26 seasons and 720 episodes.

NARUTO SEASONS IN ORDER
NARUTO SEASON 1 (EPISODES 01-57)
Naruto season 1 starts with Naruto Episode 1 “Enter: Naruto Uzumaki!” first time aired in Japan on October 3, 2002, and who introduces us to the young Naruto Uzumaki, a 11 years old tumultuous boy who spends his days doing silly things to get noticed.
NARUTO’S PAST
We then discover his heavy past where we learn that Naruto is in fact the Jinchuriki (Host) of Nine-Tails, a giant fox who destroyed the village of Konoha 11 years ago. Because of him having this Tailed Beast inside him, the inhabitants of the village started to hate Naruto, blaming him for the events that happened while he was still a newborn child.
As the episodes unfold, we get to know this young boy whose dream is to become the next Hokage in order to be recognized and respected by all the inhabitants of Hidden Leaf Village. He enters the Academy of Ninjas, the preparatory school to become Shinobi, where he meets his first friend and teacher Iruka Sensei and where he finally succeeds in becoming Genin after several attempts and earn his ninja forehead headband.
NARUTO’S TEAM
Naruto then joins Team 7 led by Kakashi Hatake and where he will have to learn to teammate with two other ninjas, Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno. As the missions succeed, friendships grow and the 3 ninjas learn to encourage each other to become better versions of themselves by confronting powerful enemies such as Zabuza Momochi and Haku at the Land of Waves.
THE CHUNIN EXAM
Returning to the Hidden Leaf, they discover that the next Chunin exam will be organized soon and the three of them decided to participate. During the Chunin exam arc, they have to pass a written test and fight against other teams in the Forest of the Death where they will meet the first Sannin of the Hidden Leaf, Orochimaru.
SASUKE VS OROCHIMARU
Orochimaru is here to manipulate Sasuke’s mind and bites him on the neck to give him his curse mark, a powerful seal that gives a huge amount of Chakra to its owner but enslaves his mind to Orochimaru.
The Sasuke vs Orochimaru fight will not take long and will followed by the fight Naruto vs Orochimaru where we see Naruto use the Nine Tails Chakra for the first time. After beating both ninjas, Orochimaru leaves the scene and the Chunin exam continues.
ROCK LEE VS GAARA
The next steps of the Chunin exam are one to one combats where we discover new interesting characters from different villages facing each other as Rock Lee vs Gaara in episodes 48 to 50 which ended with Gaara’s victory and deep injuries for Rock Lee .
The Naruto Season 1 ends with Naruto episode 57 “He Flies! He Jumps! He Lurks! Chief Toad Appears!” where Naruto trains Jiraiya, one of the three famous Sannin of the Hidden Leaf, to learn how to use the Summoning Jutsu.
NARUTO SEASON 2 (EPISODES 58-100)
Naruto season 2 starts with Naruto Episode 58 “Hospital Besieged: The Evil Hand Revealed!” where we witness Gaara’s attempt to kill Rock Lee at the hospital. Lee is fortunately saved in extremis by his sensei, Might Guy.
NARUTO VS NEJI
In Episode 60, we witness the first final round of the Chunin Exam, Naruto vs Neji which portrays a meaningful battle between Neji Hyuga, the prodigy of the Hyuga clan against Naruto Uzumaki, the eternal looser.
At first, the odds would seem against him, Naruto keeps being hit by Neji Gentle Fist and has now all his chakra path blocked, impeding him to use Ninjutsu techniques.
However with his unbreakable mental strength, Naruto succeeds to become a very legit opponent for Neji. When it seemed that the end of the fight was near, Naruto finds a way to hide himself underground letting a Shadow clone as diversion and giving him time to dig himself underground until he reaches his opponent feet to hit him with a powerful uppercut, putting him done and giving the victory to Naruto.
This fight was proof that even ninja that are considered failures can, with hard work and confidence in theirselves, beat even the most powerful genius in the world.
SHIKAMARU VS TEMARI
The next fight of the Chunin will oppose Shikamaru vs Temari in episode 64. Shikamaru Nara is a very strategical ninja that always find a way to win against disadvantage against him.
After giving confidence to his opponent, making her think that she had the advantage in this fight, Shikamaru successfully gets Temari paralysed with his shadow using a floated Kunai in the air to extend the range of his shadow paralysis jutsu.
However, while everyone though that Shikamaru had won the fight, Shikamaru decides to give up out of nowhere, explaining that he was out of Chakra and unable to end the fight. Temari therefore wins the fight, but knows inside her that she had lost it and became very admirative of Shikamaru.
SASUKE VS GAARA
Sasuke vs Gaara match starts in episode 66 where we discover the new technique of Sasuke, the Chidori, a powerful thunder Jutsu that he learned from his sensei, Kakashi Hatake.
While Gaara was hiding inside his sand, Sasuke performs his ultimate technique and hits Gaara with his Shidori, making him the first person in history capable of piercing the sand barrier of Gaara, and making him bleed for the first time as well.
After seeing his own blood, Gaara looses control and lets Shukaku, the Tailed Beast sealed inside him, take even more advantage of his body.
Kabuto, a spy from the Hidden Sound Village lead by Orochimaru witnessing the situation disguise as an Anbu, decides to launches a Genjutsu on the arena to put the audience to sleep and start the invasion of the Hidden Leaf.
The troops of the Hidden Sand Village then invade the Hidden Leaf and Hiruzen Sarutobi is made hostage by Orochimaru disguised as the Fourth Kazekage while Sasuke follows Gaara outside of the village.
OROCHIMARU VS THIRD HOKAGE
The fight Orochimaru vs Sarutobi starts in Episode 71 with Orochimaru using his Reanimation Jutsu (Edo Tensei) to summon the two first Hokage of the Hidden Leaf, Hashirama Senju, and Tobirama Senju to fight for him.
The Third Hokage succeeds to take advantage of the situation by summoning his partner Enma, the Monkey King, and by using the Reaper Death Seal to help him seal both his previous masters with it.
Meanwhile, Naruto and his friends try to catch up with Sasuke but are then ambushed by a troop of shinobis of the Hidden Sound Village. They are forced to split their formation to fight them on one to one combat so that Naruto could continue to catch up with Sasuke.
NARUTO VS GAARA
Naruto finally succeeds on catching up with Sasuke which was in a difficult situation against Gaara. Indeed, Gaara was beginning to turn himself into Shukaku, the First Tailed-Beast, which dramatically increased his strength and speed making Sasuke unable to move himself out of fear.
The fight Naruto vs Gaara starts in Episode 78 with Naruto taking advantage using 2000 shadow clones to hit Gaara. However, his advantage lasted only until Gaara completed his transformation by forcing himself to sleep so that he could let Shukaka take full control of his body.
Shukaku is now awake and starts to destroy everything around him.To confront him, Naruto decides to summon Gamabunta, a giant toad from Mount Myōboku, and turns him into a replica of the Nine-Tails to fight more seriously against the Tailed Beast.
While the transformed Gamabunta held strongly Shukaku, Naruto succeeds to headbutt Gaara and awakening him, thus destroying Shukaku’s form that required Gaara to be asleep.
THIRD HOKAGE DEATH
The match Third Hokage vs Orochimaru ends with Sarutobi sealing the hands of Orochimaru, preventing him to do any hand signs and therefore impeding him to use any Jutsu forever. This situation forced Orochimaru to back on retreat.
Hiruzen Sarutobi then dies, his soul eaten by the Death Reaper and with heart pierced by the Kusanagi Sword of his former student. The Hidden Sand army backing up on retreat, the situation in the Hidden Leaf gets back under control thanks to the sacrifice of the Third Hokage.
After the Third Hokage funeral in Episode 81, Jiraiya is approached by the village’s elders and gets offered the position of Fifth Hokage. Declining their offer, Jiraiya insists that his former teammate, Tsunade Senju, would be a better candidate for this title and offers them to ask her himself if they accepted to let Naruto follow him during his travel.
At the same time, Itachi Uchiha and Kisame Hoshigaki enter the village looking out for Naruto. They then encounter with Hidden Leaf Jonin, Asuma Sarutobi and Kurenai Yuhi which they easily take advantage against until Kakashi arrived.
ITACHI VS KAKASHI
Itachi vs Kakashi fight starts in Episode 82 and resulted in Kakashi being trapped into Itachi Tsukuyomi which made him unable to fight anymore. They are all then saved by Might Guy, a powerful Taijutsu specialist from the Hidden Leaf Village, but Itachi decided to put an end to this as he said: “that they did not come to Konoha to start a war”. They both leave after.
Sasuke then learns from other Shinobi that Itachi is back in the village and is after Naruto. Sasuke’s goal being to kill him to avenge his family murder, he rushed into another town looking for Naruto and Jiraiya and finally finds his older brother in a hotel.
Sasuke fights Itachi, but the difference in power is too big and Sasuke gets beaten easily by his older brother. Itachi then torments his brother’s mind by using Tsukuyomi and making him see again and again the awful night when Itachi killed his clan. As Sasuke’s was about to collapse and Naruto to be captured by Kisame, Jiraiya arrived and saved both children by using his summoning Jutsu “Toad Mouth Bind” which forced the Akatsuki members to flee using Itachi Amaterasu.
FINDING TSUNADE
After that, Naruto and Jiraiya went back looking for Tsunade while Jiraiya begins to teach Naruto how to master the Rasengan. They finally encounter with Tsunade in a bar where the two friends began to discuss about the past and the situation in Konoha.
However, Jiraiya wasn’t the first to encounter with Tsunade, Orochimaru had already found her and asked her to give him his hands back in exchange for him using his Reincarnation Jutsu to resuscitate her lover and her little brother.
In a night while Jiraiya meets Tsunade to discuss around a drink, Tsunade drugs Jiraiya’s drink and puts him to sleep.
The next morning, Tsunade meets with Orochimaru to accept his offer. However, while she’s preparing his Healing Jutsu, Kabuto aknowledges that Tsunade’s healing Jutsu was filled with killing intent and stepped between them saving his master.
TSUNADE VS KABUTO
The fight Tsunade vs Kabuto was very one-sided until Kabuto used a little trick against his opponent. Knowing that Tsunade was afraid of blood, Kabuto takes advantage of her by making himself bleed so that he could finish her easily. As he was about to put her down, Shizune, Tsunade’s student, Naruto and Jiraiya arrived to help her.
SANNIN FIGHT
In Episode 94, a fight starts between the two sides, Jiraiya and Tsunade vs Orochimaru and Naruto vs Kabuto.
However, Jiraiya, still weakened by Tsunade’s drug, is unable to beat Orochimaru while Naruto is no match for Kabuto. While they were about to lose the fight, Naruto succeeds in blocking Kabuto’s attack against Tsunade and uses a Shadow Clone to complete his Rasengan in front of their astonished eyes. Naruto then hits Kabuto with his Rasengan and puts him down.
Looking at the situation downside, Orochimaru recognizes that Naruto could be a potential future threat and tries to kill him. While Naruto was about to get murdered by Orochimaru, Tsunade remembered Naruto’s words and goal to become Hokage, the same words that her lover Dan and her little brother Nawaki used to say. She then stepped in front of Naruto and used herself as a human shield to protect Naruto and save his life.
While Tsunade started bleeding, Orochimaru thought that the fight was over until Tsunade stopped shaking and hit him back. Tsunade had now overcomed her fear of blood and is ready to fight at 100% in this fight.
Then, in Episode 95 starts the famous Sannin fight between the former comrades. Each one of them summons his/her creature. Orochimaru summons Manda and Tsunade and Jiraiya summon Katsuyu and Gamabunta.
The fight ends with the victory of Naruto, Jiraiya and Tsunade who succeeded to force Orochimaru to retreat with Kabuto. Naruto then receives Tsunade Necklace and a kiss of good fortune on his forehead. They all come back to the Hidden Leaf and Tsunade announces that she accepts the Hokage title.
TSUNADE BECOMES HOKAGE
Naruto Season 2 ends with Naruto Episode 100 “Sensei and Student: The Bond of the Shinobi” where she confirms that she will be able to heal Rock Lee injuries and Tsunade becomes Hokage and the role of the village’s protector is passed to her with a ceremony.
NARUTO SEASON 3 (EPISODES 101-141)
Naruto Season 3 starts with Naruto Episode “Gotta See! Gotta Know! Kakashi-Sensei’s True Face!”, a Filler Naruto Episode where Naruto, Sasuke and Sakura try to find out what is under Kakashi Mask.
From Episode 107, the real story continues and we learn that Shikamaru is promoted Chunin while Rock Lee accepts to take the operation even if it would mean that he could not be a Ninja anymore.
Sasuke, injured during his mission in the Land of Tea, is angry for not being strong enough to kill Itachi and is jealous that Naruto has become stronger while he was recovering. He then asks Naruto to fight him to see who is the strongest, which Naruto agreed and both of them started to fight each other on the roof of the Hospital.
SASUKE VS NARUTO
The fight Sasuke vs Naruto, occuring in Episode 107 “The Battle Begins: Naruto vs. Sasuke”, was going out of control when Sakura rushed between her comrades to stop them.
While she was about to get seriously hit by both deadly techniques, Kakashi Sensei succeeds to intervein and stops this nonsense by throwing both characters into water tanks to nullify their techniques.
Kakashi is angry at Sasuke, but Sasuke cannot overcome his anger, and while he was leaving the scene, he noticed that Naruto’s technique was stronger than his’ which made his anger go even stronger.
Kakashi later encounters with Sasuke and lectures him about this anger inside his heart. He explains to Sasuke that Revenge will only bring him sadness and force him to leave a hateful life which he wouldn’t wish to anyone.
SASUKE MEETS THE SOUND FOUR
After Kakashi left, Sasuke meets with the Sound Four, a group of Ninjas from the Hidden Sound Village selected by Orochimaru for their strength and loyalty, who explains to Sasuke that if he really wants to become stronger, he must master the power of the Orochimaru Curse Mark. Sasuke, tired of playing ninja games, and after realizing that he was inferior to all four of them, finally gives in and decides to go with them.
SASUKE LEAVES THE HIDDEN LEAF
While he was leaving that night, Sakura was waiting for him at the exit of the village. She tells him that she loves him and that she would follow him until the end if he accepts to have her by his side. Sasuke, touched by her words, thank her and gently knocks her unconscious before he leaves the Hidden Leaf.
Sasuke joins the Sound Four outside of the Village and learns that the first step in gaining power is to evolve Sasuke’s cursed mark to its second state. For this to happen, the Sound Four seals Sasuke into a barrel and carry him from Konoha as his seal advances.
Sakura who awakened in the morning, informs Tsunade of Sasuke’s defection. Unable to send higher ranking ninjas after Sasuke, Tsunade orders Shikamaru Nara to assemble a team of genin under his lead to go after Sasuke. Shikamaru then selects Naruto, Neji Hyuga, Choji Akimichi, and Kiba Inuzuka, and quickly devises the optimal formation for the group.
Along their pursuit to recover Sasuke, the Team lead by Shikamaru will have to fight against each member of the Sand Four. The first one is Jirobo, a powerful shinobi capable of absorbing the chakra of his opponents. After breaking out of a dome created by Jirobo, the team leaves Choji taking care of this opponent.
CHOJI VS JIROBO
The fight Choji vs Jirobo starts on Episode 113 and ends in episode 114 with the victory of Choji thanks of the help of the Akimichi’s Three colored pills.
The next opponent is Kidomaru, a powerful shinobi that uses webs to immobilize his opponents and arrows to finish them. Without any second waisted, Neji decides that he would be the one to take care of him so that the others could continue.
NEJI VS KIDOMARU
The fight Neji vs Kidomaru starts in episode 116 and will be very intense for the ninja of the clan Hyuga. Indeed, Neji’s opponent has very easily found out that the Byakugan had a blind spot in the back 180° of Neji’s neck and started attacking from this blind spot.
Neji being at disadvantage, suffered from huge injuries during the fight, until he successfully managed to beat his opponent in episode 117 by letting himself being hit by one of Kidomaru’s arrow so that he could paralyze him and give him the finishing blow. Neji then collapses, leaving the retrieval of Sasuke up to the others.
KIBA INUZUKA VS SAKON
The battle Kiba Inuzuka vs Sakon is a complete nightmare for Kiba and Akamaru. Sakon and Ukon are strange ninjas capable of merging and unmerging themselves to put their opponent at a disadvantage. Even with the help of Akamaru, Kiba is struggling to keep up with his opponents until Kankuro arrives.
KANKURO VS SAKON
Kankuro is a Puppet Master from the Hidden Sand Village who came to help Naruto recover Sasuke. Although Kiba warns him of his opponent’s strength and asks him to flee and save his life, which Kankuro refuses and starts to fight Sakon.
The fight Kankuro vs Sakon in episode 125 will be very easy for Hidden Sand Ninja as he used his puppets to lure Ukon and Sakon and trap them inside them allowing him to kill them without any difficulty.
SHIKAMARU VS TAYUYA
The fight Shikamaru vs Tayuya in Episode 119 will be very technical. As the battle starts, Tayuya summons three creatures that she controls with her flute, not letting Shimakaru any time to think about a strategy.
While he’s fighting them, Shikamaru starts to understand that each melody played by Tayuya flute has a specific meaning which lets him take advantage of this situation and forced Tayuya to quickly switch actions before Shikamaru could react.
Once Shimakaru successfully managed to take control of Tayuya’s creatures, he also finally managed to trap her and capture her with his shadow paralysis technique. However, Tayuya then evolved into the second state of Orochimaru curse mark and became stronger enough to fight against Shikamaru’s Jutsu.
While Shikamaru was about to get killed, arrives Temari, another ninja of the Hidden Sand Village, to save him.
TEMARI VS TAYUYA
The fight Temari vs Tayuya will not take long. With Temari’s arrival, Tayuya decides to escape to the surrounding trees to hide herself. Bad choice, Temari used her fan to cut through the forest and succeeds in eliminating Tayuya with ease.
NARUTO VS KIMIMARO
It is now Naruto’s turn to confront his opponent in episode 123, Kimimaro, which was the one carrying the barrel where Sasuke was trapped into. Naruto enraged gives everything that he has, using his gut and a countless number of Shadow clones to beat him.
Unfortunately, the fight Naruto vs Kimimaro will not be easy as Kimimaro’s strength was way over his’.
As Naruto starts getting frustrated with his lack of power, Sasuke’s cursed seal finally reaches its second level, which allowed him to exit the coffin. Sasuke then leaves the scene and makes his way to the Orochimaru Hideout. Naruto tries in vain to recover Sasuke, but Kimimaro won’t let him pass until a new ninja arrives, Rock Lee.
ROCK LEE VS KIMIMARO
With his strength, Rock Lee is able to take care of Kimimaro while Naruto can continue his quest to recover Sasuke. Soon after the fight Rock Lee vs Kimimaro had begun in Episode 123, Lee asks Kimimaro for a timeout so that he can take his medicine.
Kimimaro intrigued agrees, and Lee drinks the content of his medicine bottle. However, because what grabbed wasn’t his medicine but a bottle of sake, Lee becomes instantly intoxicated and starts to attack Kimimaro completely drunk.
Rock Lee Drunken Fist is unpredictable and impossible to read for Kimimaro which makes him impossible to dodge his attacks. Kimimaro is therefore forced to use his most powerful abilities to recover the advantage. Unfortunately for the Hidden Leaf Ninja, Lee begins to sober up and recovers his previous state which let Kimimaro recover easily the advantage of the fight.
GAARA VS KIMIMARO
While Rock Lee strength was completely overpassed by Kimimaro’s, arrives a new protagonist from the Hidden Sand Village, Gaara of the Red Sand.
The Fight Gaara vs Kimimaro starts in Episode 126 and will be full of surprises. Each of the two ninjas is giving his 100% to win, Gaara with his sand and Kimimaro with his Kekkei Genkai, neither of them leaving the advantage to the other.
With Gaara’s sand barrier looking impenetrable, Kimimaro decides to harden a bone around his arm to pierce throw it which succeeds. Gaara in a difficult position calls upon the sand in the ground and burries Kimimaro deep underground, confining him to death.
While he was about to let himself die, Kimimaro remembers his oath to Orochimaru and unleashed an ultimate attack of bones which bursted from the ground.
Gaara and Rock Lee completely exhausted, unable to move, were about to get killed by Kimimaro. However, Kimimaro disease gets to him first and he dies sudently in episode 127, offering the victory to Gaara.
NARUTO VS SASUKE
After all these events, Naruto finally managed to catch up with Sasuke at the Valley of the end and asks him to come back to the village, which Sasuke refused. His only one goal is to become stronger to be able to kill his brother and for that, he must kill his closest friend, which he said was Naruto.
The fight Naruto vs Sasuke begins in Episode 128. Both of them fight with their gut for their goal, Sasuke for his revenge against his older brother and Naruto for his friendship with Sasuke.
While the fight continues, the anime gives us flashbacks of Sasuke’s childhood were we learn the terrible events that happened between Itachi and Sasuke. In a terrible night were Sasuke was coming late from school, he discovers that every member of his clan had been slaughtered, his parents included, the only one standing being his older brother Itachi.
Sasuke completely chocked from this scene asks his older brother who could have commit such horrible crime, which Itachi makes him understand that it was him that killed the Uchiha clan and his parents because he wanted to test his strength.
After putting his younger brother into his Tsukuyomi to make him live over and over again what happened during that night, Itachi tells Sasuke to seek power and vengeance for one day maybe take his revenge against him. And that one day, when be when he would have awakened the Mangekyou Sharingan after he had killed his best friend.
Back to the fight, Sasuke activates the Orochimaru curse mark in order to gain an advantage against Naruto. Naruto then calls upon even more of the Nine-Tails’s chakra. As the demon fox-form continues its ravaging onslaught, Sasuke is put on the defensive, forcing him to advance his Cursed Mark powers to its final stage to compensate.
After activating Stage 2 of the his Cursed Mark, Sasuke transforms himself into a winged with a power level equal to Naruto’s. The two best friends prepares then their ultimate attack, Naruto his Nine-Tails chakra infused Rasengan and Sasuke his Curse-Mark enhanced Chidori. The two powerful attacks clash and the fight Naruto vs Sasuke ends in Episode 134 with Sasuke’s victory.
There, thinking about Itachi’s words, Sasuke decides not to kill Naruto and not awaken the Mangekyou Sharingan, refusing to follow the same path that his older brother and leaves the scene to join Orochimaru.
Naruto is rescued by his sensei, Kakashi who arrived few minutes after and is taken back to the Hidden Leaf. Lost in his thoughts, accepting hardly that he had failed to save his best friend from the shadows in his heart, Jiraiya appears in Naruto’s hospital room and proposes him to leave with him during 3 years to become stronger, which Naruto accepted.
Naruto Season 3 ends with Episode 141 “Sakura’s Determination”, where Sakura decides to become Tsunade’s student to improve her usefulness as a Ninja and go see Naruto one last time to thank him and insisting that next time, she would help him save Sasuke before Naruto leaves for three years of training with Jiraiya.
NARUTO SEASON 4 (EPISODES 142-183)
Naruto season 4 starts with Naruto Episode 142 “The Three Villains from the Maximum Security Prison”, a mixed cannon/filler episode where we learn the identity of Fujin and Rajin, the Famous Idiot Brothers.
The season 4 is filled with only Filler Naruto Episodes, which means that if you want to keep focus on the main plot, you can skip all the episodes from 142 to 183 without loosing any important information.
NARUTO SEASON 5 (EPISODES 184-220)

As season 4, Naruto season 5 is only filled with Naruto Filler Episodes that are not important to watch if you want to keep focus on the main plot. So if it’s your case, you can without any inconvenience skip episodes 184 to 220 without loosing any important information.
